Is there a registration fee?
There is no registration fee to participate in Walk MS, but we encourage everyone to raise a minimum of $125.
I’m walking and my family will join me. Should they register for Walk MS?
Yes. All walkers, regardless of age, must register to participate in the Walk MS event. This is for your safety and so that each participant qualifies for fundraising incentives, including the $125 minimum to receive an official Walk MS event T-shirt.
Can my child (12 or under) participate in Walk MS?
Yes - Walk MS is a family event for all ages!
I will be out of town during Walk MS. Can I still participate as a Virtual Walker?
Yes. You do not have to physically be at the walk event to participate. Virtual Walkers can register as an individual or team participant. Virtual Walkers will receive the same benefits and prizes as event participants. Click here to learn more about Virtual Walkers.
Can I register for Walk MS the day of the event?
Yes. While it is recommended that you pre-register for Walk MS, we do offer registration the day of the walk. When you arrive at the Walk site, proceed to New Registration. If you wish to register online, please click here.
Is there a minimum fundraising requirement?
No, however all participants who raise $125 will receive an official Walk MS event T-shirt. Get helpful fundraising tips here.
Can I still become a Top Fundraiser or Elite 200 Club member after the event is over?
Yes. The fundraising deadline to be a Top Fundraiser, Elite 200 Club member or to be eligible for team rewards is June 6, 2014.
Where do I send my donations?
Please mail all Walk MS donations to the address below. Be sure to include your name, account number, and Walk location in the memo section of the check. Please do not send cash.

Who do I make checks payable to?
Walk MS (Your Walk Location, i.e. Orange County). Also remember to include your name and account number in the memo section of each check as this will ensure donations are credited to the appropriate participant.
What is an account number?
Your account number is assigned to you upon registration. If you are a past participant, your account number was assigned to you when you registered for your first event with the National MS Society. This number is found on the mailing label for any mailing you receive from the Society. How long does it take for donations to appear on my personal web page?
Donations made online are immediately posted to your account and will appear on your web page at the time of the donation. Donations that are mailed prior to the event can take two to four weeks to appear on your web page. Donations submitted on the day of the event can take up to six weeks to appear on your web page. To avoid the wait, encourage your donors to sponsor you online; online donations are safe and easy. Click here to make an online donation to a Walk MS participant.
What if my company wants to match my donation?
Many companies have matching gift and volunteer incentive programs to maximize their financial contributions to non-profit organizations. This means they will match their employees’ donations to non-profits, increasing your fundraising total and bringing us closer to a world free of MS. Are donations tax deductible and how do I get a receipt?
Yes. All donations are tax deductible to the fullest extent allowed by law. Your cleared check or credit card transaction serves as a receipt. Donors giving $250 or more will automatically receive an acknowledgement letter by the end of 2014. Receipts are also available to donors upon request. In what ways will I be rewarded for my fundraising in Walk MS 2014?
There are many perks that come with fundraising. We encourage all participants to raise $125 or more to earn an official Walk MS event T-shirt. Our early incentive prize this year will go to all participants who raise $250 or more by February 20, 2014. Fundraising contests will be held leading up to Walk MS with exciting incentives and prizes!

I was a top fundraiser at Walk MS 2013; why am I not included in the Elite 200 Club for 2014?
The Elite 200 Club is made up of the top 200 fundraisers from the previous Walk MS NYC - Southern NY events, based on their fundraising as of May 31, 2013. The top 200 fundraisers from ALL SEVEN Walk MS sites in 2013 have been inducted into the 2014 Elite 200 Club. Will I receive my packet and donation envelope in the mail?
We will not send participant packets and donation envelopes prior to Walk MS. We strongly recommend registering online prior to the event, however, there will be paper registration forms available on the day of the Walk. Bibs are not mandatory to wear, but upon arrival, participants can choose to personalize an “I walk for” bib. Also, if you have additional donations, there will be envelopes available. What is a Top Fundraiser and how do I become one?
All participants who raise $1,000 or more prior to or on event day are Walk MS Top Fundraisers and will receive special perks at Walk MS including a Top Fundraiser T-shirt, admission for you and a guest to the Top Fundraiser Tent at Walk MS (NYC location only), and a Top Fundraiser prize after the event. What do I do if I experience issues with My Participant Center?
If you are using Internet Explorer 11, some aspects of the Participant Center won’t function properly. Click here to see which version of Internet Explorer (IE) you have.

What are the benefits of starting a team?
Participating in Walk MS is more fun when you are part of a team. It’s a little known fact that team members raise more money than individuals. Teams have a special meeting area at the event and get the chance to participate in team contests with exciting prizes. Teams can also qualify for top fundraising honors and rewards.
Can donations be made to the Team?
Donations that are made as a team gift will be applied to the team captain and will not count toward a team member's fundraising minimum. If the donation needs to be applied to a particular team member, the team captain must contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
How many people can I have on my team?
Teams must consist of three or more members in order to receive team recognition, awards, and prizes. There is no limit to how many team members you can have; the more, the merrier!
I’d like to join an existing team, what should I do?
Go to www.walkMSnyc.org. Choose your Walk site and click on the “Join a Team” link. You will need to locate your team using the team finder and select it as part of the registration process to ensure you’re added to your team roster. If you have already registered as an individual and would like to create or join a team, please email email@example.com for further assistance.
Can my team hand in our donations together with our team captain?
No, all donations must be handed in individually. Fundraising prizes and incentives are based on individual fundraising success. Teams can fundraise together and distribute the donations among team members using a Donation Distribution Form.
What are top fundraising team rewards?
Elite Teams, teams that raise $40,000 or more, receive a private meeting area at the start and finish line at Walk MS. Super Team, teams that raise $15,000 to $39,999, have a special area at the finish line. Teams are also able to decorate their areas for the event. Does my team have a separate meeting area?
Yes, all teams meet in the Team Meeting Area the morning of Walk MS where they can meet their team members and have their team photo taken.

Event Information FAQs
Why is the New York City walk on a different weekend from the other five walks?
Due to ongoing construction at the South Street Seaport we have been working diligently to find a new and better location for our NYC walk, and are excited to share that for the first time, we will host this event at Pier 26 in Manhattan! Our change in venue has also resulted in a change of date for Walk MS NYC to Sunday, May 4, 2014.
Why is there just one route at each Walk MS site?
Walk MS is the rallying point of the MS movement, the one place where everyone affected by MS can come together. It is critical that each of our Walk MS routes is fully accessible to everyone, regardless of mobility, and our new single routes achieve that goal. There are two routes in Manhattan because of the large number of participants (7,000) and the requirement by the City of New York and NYPD. Several of the Walk MS sites offer a 1.5 mile option.
Will lunch be served?
No, most Walk MS events will be completed well before lunchtime. A light breakfast and snacks will be served at all Walk MS sites.
What is the event experience going to be like at the Walk MS locations?
We aim to make your experience at Walk MS as safe as possible for everyone, regardless of age or ability, while ensuring a fun, festive, community atmosphere to raise as much money as possible to support annual programs and services and research for the treatment, cause and cure for MS. We believe that in 2014 and beyond, Walk MS NYC - Southern NY will be one of the largest Walk MS events in the country and will continue to grow in number of participants and money raised. Our goal in 2014 is to raise $3 million to help create a world free of MS, and the changes we are making will help get us there but we can only do it with YOUR support and YOUR continued fundraising efforts.
How many Walk MS events take place Nationwide?
There are currently 600 Walk MS events and 10 Challenge Walk MS events held Nationwide; over 250,000 walkers participate in support of the National MS Society. How many Walk MS Events does the New York City - Southern New York Chapter host?
The New York City - Southern New York Chapter will host six walks next spring in Manhattan, Staten Island, Westchester, Rockland, Putnam, and Orange counties.
How many miles is the walk?
Walk MS is designed for people of all abilities and can accommodate strollers, scooters, and wheelchairs. Every Walk MS location will offer different route options, so please check back for final route options closer to the event. Visit our “Event Details” page for the most up to date information for each site.
What if I can’t finish the Walk?
No problem! Each Walk MS site will have an accessible support vehicle patrolling the route. If necessary, a support vehicle can pick you up and take you to the finish line.
What do I wear at Walk MS?
Dress in layers so you are warm at the start and finish lines, and cool while walking. In addition, wear comfortable walking shoes. Please note: there is no baggage check at Walk MS.
What food is available at Walk MS?
Light snacks and a variety of beverages are available at the start line, rest stops on the route and the finish line. If you have special dietary restrictions or needs, please bring your own food and/or beverages.
What are the safety rules at Walk MS?
The Walk MS route is not closed to traffic and all city and state laws must be obeyed at all times. Walkers are instructed to stay on the sidewalks and listen to law enforcement and official route marshals during the event. Walkers under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult at all times. Wearing headphones and using cellular phones while walking is prohibited; please step off the route if you need to use a cell phone. The use of headphones limits your ability to hear critical safety notifications, as well as traffic, other pedestrians and participants around you. Also, to ensure the safety of all Walk MS participants, roller skates/blades and bicycles are not permitted.
What do we do if it is inclement weather?
The event goes on rain or shine! Please check weather reports and come prepared.
